FAQ

Q. What materials are you working in?

A. Most of my sculptural work is in wood. I use Recycled Cedar, White Pine and occasionally hardwoods often in combination with metals and found objects. In some pieces the material is metal only including steel, aluminum and bronze. The wood pieces may be finished with paints, stains and waxes while the metal pieces may utilize industrial powder coating or other finishing methods.

In Jewelry making I make lamp work glass beads and string them with metal, semiprecious stones, found objects, glass seed beads and metal findings.
In Drawing and Painting I use many traditional media and techniques and some more experimental. Many of these works are part of the ideation process for 3 Dimensional works

Q. Are the wood pieces carved from a single wood blank?

A. Occasionally I use carving methods to add textural elements but more often the pieces are fabricated in wood using basis woodworking techniques. The additive process allows changes and refinement during the creation and I find shaping and sanding wood a meditative experience.

Q. Can your sculptures be places outside?

A. Each piece is different. Please ask about a specific piece. If a sculpture is wood and finished in paints and waxes it is indoor only. Some wood pieces can be placed outdoor if exterior friendly adhesives are used and wood is meant to weather. Metal pieces can be place outdoor if intended to oxidize or if surfaces are protected with industrial UV stable finishes

Q. Do you do commissions?

A. Let’s talk! I have created several commissioned works and find the collaborative artist/client relationship enjoyable for site specific pieces.

Q. What about shipping?

A. UPS or other carriers for smaller work. Larger pieces that require trucking would be quoted as needed. I can also deliver if necessary within the Midwest region.

Q. Will you install sculpture pieces?

A. I will quote installation and or provide engineering drawings where required for larger public or private pieces.

Q. What does the S. stand for?

A. Stuart
