Sentinels Series
Intro: Cedar, Enamel, Limestone
About this piece:
The Totemic aspect of this series is further explored larger pieces similar in concept to my sentinel pieces. Totem derives from the Ojibwa language and means watcher. This concept of watching over or guardianship of family, clan or tribe is found in many aboriginal societies, shamanistic beliefs and rites.
Note: These should not be confused with Northwest Native American totem poles that are actually a heraldic device or badge for family and clan. I see these figures as strong, earthy forms and don’t ascribe any ancestral or supernatural power to them; the reference to totems is about shape, texture and visual presence. In the Shango post versions the titles reference the Yoruba thunder deity’s ax shaped headpiece.
